Hormones and Trading: What a Three-Month Study of Women Traders Showed Us
Share
Hormones and trading are far more connected than most women are ever told. In a three-month study we ran with women who already knew how to trade, the group that learned to work with their hormonal cycle pulled clearly ahead of equally skilled women running the very same strategy without that knowledge. The difference was large enough that we changed our curriculum because of it.
Most women who come to trading have spent a lifetime being handed advice that was quietly built around someone else's body and someone else's schedule. So when we started noticing, a few years ago, that some of our students would trade beautifully for a couple of weeks and then wrestle with the very same charts a week later, we did not want to guess about why. We wanted to look properly. So about two years ago we ran a small study of our own, and what we found surprised us enough that we have never taught the same way since.
Why we wanted to study this in the first place
The pattern we kept seeing had nothing to do with skill. A woman would follow her plan with real discipline through part of the month, then find herself second-guessing, overtrading, or sitting frozen through perfectly good setups a week or two later, with nothing about her knowledge having changed at all. The one thing that had shifted was where she was in her cycle. There is a growing body of research suggesting that the hormones moving through a woman's body across the month shape how she weighs risk and makes decisions, and we wanted to see whether teaching women about that directly would change how they traded.
How the study actually worked
We followed three separate groups of women traders for 3 months. Every woman in the study was between the ages of 18 and 50, we mixed backgrounds on purpose, and each one began with about $1,000 in her account so we were comparing like with like. None of them were absolute beginners either. These were women who already knew their way around a chart, had their risk management down, and were well past the stage of making rookie mistakes.
The first group was 10 women trading entirely on their own, outside our school, using their own strategies with no coaching from us. The second group were students of ours trading the Wealtha Method strategy the way we normally teach it. The third group traded that same strategy with one thing added: they also learned about their hormonal cycle, which phases tend to suit steadier and lower-risk trading, which tend to support more considered risk, and how the stage they were in might be quietly shaping the decisions they made that day. Because the first group differed from us in two ways at once, their own strategy and no coaching, the comparison we cared about most was the one between the second and third groups, who differed by that single factor alone.
What the numbers showed us
Across the three months, the gaps were far wider than we expected. The women trading their own strategies with no structure grew their accounts by roughly 5 to 10% on average. The students trading the Wealtha Method strategy averaged closer to 150 to 250% account growth over the same window. That first gap reflects strategy and the simple fact of having structure and guidance woven together, so we hold it loosely rather than reading too much into it.
The comparison that actually stopped us in our tracks was between our own two groups. The students who added the hormonal education averaged, on top of what the strategy group made, another 100 to 200% over the three months. The two groups ran the same strategy, started with the same balance, and had similar experience behind them. The only real difference was that one group understood the body it was trading in. These were experienced women running a strategy they knew well, with their risk management already solid, and the returns sat right in line with what we see when we backtest this approach, so this was no lucky run on small accounts. What truly changed our minds was the sheer size of the difference between two otherwise identical groups.
Why the hormonal group pulled ahead
When we looked closely at how these women traded, the reason was refreshingly human. They had simply stopped fighting themselves. A woman who knew she was in a phase where she leaned toward impulsive, higher-risk decisions could ease off, size smaller, and protect her account through the days that would otherwise have quietly cost her. A woman who knew she was in a steadier, more focused stretch could lean into her analysis with more trust in her own read. Trading with clear risk rules that bend with your own patterns instead of against them is really just good risk management with the full picture finally included. If that side of things is still new to you, we walk through the basics gently in risk management in trading for beginners.
What this does and does not mean for you
Two honest caveats here, because we would far rather you trust us than be dazzled by us. This was a small internal study, around 30 women over 3 months, not a large peer-reviewed trial, so we treat it as a strong signal that shaped our teaching rather than as settled scientific proof. And not every woman has a textbook cycle. Some are on hormonal birth control, some have cycles that shift with age or health, and some, especially toward the older end of our range, may not be cycling in a regular way at all. The real skill we teach is self-knowledge rather than a rigid calendar: learning to notice your own patterns, track how you tend to feel and decide across a month, and shape your trading around the woman you actually are. It is one more reason we believe women bring real strengths to this craft, something we wrote about in why women often make better traders than they're told.
What this study ultimately convinced us of is that leaving hormones out of a woman's trading education was never a neutral choice. It quietly left her working against a part of herself she was never taught to understand. That is why this is now a mandatory part of what we teach at Wealtha, and why we would never go back to teaching it any other way.
If you are curious what it would feel like to learn to trade in a way that was actually built around your body and your life rather than borrowed from someone else's, that is exactly the thing we do here. You can tell us where you are starting from through a few short questions, and we will show you what learning this properly could look like for you, at your own pace. There is no pressure in it, only a clearer sense of the door in front of you.
The figures above are the documented results of the specific women who took part in this three-month internal study. They reflect those participants' own individual effort, experience, and the market conditions during that period, and they are not a prediction or a promise of what you or anyone else would earn. Results vary considerably from one person to the next, trading carries real risk including the risk of losing money, and past results never guarantee future outcomes.
